Is a Political Career & Life Possible?

NEW Leadership is a program at colleges across the US that works to educate and empower college women to take on public leadership roles. 30 women from colleges across Ohio attended the week long program covering a variety of topics. I led a Work Life Pursuit workshop entitled: See into Your Future: Career/Life Vision. Here are several highlights from our group...

Favorite Day of the Year

It’s my favorite day of the year.  The day we get an Extra Hour!  We get to turn our clocks back as daylight savings time comes to an end. At my Work/Life Pursuit workshops I ask the question, “What would you do with an Extra Hour?”  The answer gives you a clue to what’s missing in your work/life blend.   Some say, “Spend more time with their children” – even though they spend every minute they can with their children. Some say, “Exercise” or “Sleep” – perhaps a need to take better care of themselves? Others opt for relaxing, time...

“Extra Hour” Provides Clue to Work/Life Blend

E&Y women gathered together at the PWN event on October 25, 2013 Friday afternoon to be treated to booths with support for the working woman and conversation with colleagues. The question at the Work/Life Pursuit booth was “What would you do with an Extra Hour?”  Why do I ask the “Extra Hour” question? The answer gives you a clue to what may be missing in your work/life blend, your pain point or stress factor. Some said, “Spend more time with their partner/spouse.”  Could this be stress from guilt feelings? Some said, “Exercise” or...

Karen Murphy quoted in DESTINY Magazine

Check this out! Karen Murphy was interviewed by South African author, Thandi Skade, for Thandi’s Love Notes feature article, Tunnel Vision, on parenting teenagers appearing in the October 2013 issue of DESTINY Magazine – a high-end business and lifestyle magazine for women. “Being a good role model to your teenagers by upholding your own standards, says Murphy, is central to seeing your kids through the tunnel.  ‘Take the time to assess your own behaviour. If you’ve been a ‘helicopter parent’ who hovers over your...

And guess what?  Together we learned that we are not alone!  We are more apt to feel stress and guilt when our work and life are not aligned to...

The Ultimate Challenge?

The Ultimate Challenge?

Can you spend five minutes doing absolutely nothing?  Have you lost the ability to relax, even if you try? There are a couple of theories on this phenomenon – 1) we truly are overloaded or 2) we purposefully live life on fast forward. Overloaded? We are just plain overloaded in our dual income, single parent and/or sandwich family structures.  Women are particularly affected with our mastery of multi-tasking; we can always think of something else that needs to be done. The other day I had the rare occasion of being completely alone at...
